Mad, as in Crazy
Welcome to my blog. I am an African American quiltmaker, teacher and quilt historian. My blog title is a play on the title of a Tyler Perry play and movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I alwasy thought the name was catchy. There's no connection between the story line and my blog.
This week is my "Week of Giving" in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr holiday. Sunday, Jan 15, donated 8 quilt tops to a homeless shelter project. Monday, gave fabric to a friend in need of encouragement. Today, Tuesday, donation of household goods and clothing to a local charity who makes house calls (what could be easier?).
Back to the charity quilts. The nice thing about this particular project is that the request is for tops only, size 60 x 90. Eureka, a perfect opportunity to clear out my fabric stash and UFOs. Each member of the guild was asked to donate 3 tops. I made three and happened to mention it to my friend Jan. Thus the additional 5 tops, with 2 more in progress.
Here's one of the tops I am making from Jan's donation. There was a lot of the blue (originally purchased for backing) and about a yard of the print. I measured a length of 90 inches and cut the fabric in half lengthwise, through the fold. The rest of the fabric was cut into 14 inch squares to be made into a strip that will be sewn in the center of the two halves. Quick and easy.
